When it comes to building surfboards, every design decision is a tradeoff.
Longer boards generally paddle more easily. Shorter boards generally turn more quickly. Flatter rocker glides with less effort. More rocker fits into steeper waves.
There can be no perfect surfboard, only a surfboard that's particularly well suited to a particular purpose.
And that's actually good news. It means surfboard design isn't about finding "the perfect board." It's about deciding which tradeoffs make the most sense for the kind of surfing you want to do.
Every Design Decision Has a Cost
Take rocker, for example.
A flatter surfboard generally paddles more efficiently, catches waves a little earlier, and carries speed through slower sections. Add more rocker and the board fits more comfortably into steeper parts of the wave and becomes easier to redirect.
Neither is "better."
They're simply optimized for different things.
The same is true of almost every element of surfboard design.
Of course, these aren't hard-and-fast rules. A skilled surfboard designer can move those tradeoffs around, but they never disappear entirely.
Every design choice is answering a different question.
Every Board Has a Job
If you're just starting out, the first job of any surfboard is to help you catch waves consistently and build confidence in the ocean.
As your surfing progresses, you may decide you'd like a board that turns a little quicker, fits into steeper waves, or excels in a particular kind of surf.
That's when the tradeoffs become more interesting.
That's why one surfer falls in love with a fish. Another reaches for a longboard every chance they get. Another rides the same mid-length all year. And another wouldn't trade their trusty thruster for anything.
None of them are wrong.
Every board has its own unique place.
The fun is learning what each board was designed to do—and finding the ones that suit your own style of surfing best.
