Sailing to Tahiti... to Surf Teahupoo
When people hear that my brother and I once spent two years sailing from Dana Point to Tahiti in search of surf, their first question is usually "Did you encounter any storms or bad situations?"
We did indeed.
More specifically off the coast of Pitcairn, where the 14 island inhabitants would not allow us to anchor—due to concerns about the ongoing Covid 19 pandemic.
Given the choice to either forfeit our vessel or sail directly into a storm, we chose to sail into the storm.
We were forced to face 40 knot winds and big seas head on. It was a miserable 18 hours, but we survived and are better for it. As Yvon Chouinard famously said, "It is not an adventure until something goes wrong".
These travel adventures are what inspire us to be better individuals and continue to get in the ocean every day. With that, we wanted to share our delight by creating an online platform so others (no matter where you are located) can enjoy the same joy we experience through surfing.
We are excited to be building an online community of surfers through the Early and Often Surf Club. Whether it's to discuss waves, board theory, be inquisitive about the ocean and your surfing beginnings or simply have a community of surfers to be involved or go surfing with, we are excited for you to join us!
Please participate in any and all discussions. This is meant to be an ACTIVE platform; an anecdote to the passive scroll.
With that, we are VERY excited to start a little series called "How to Plan a Surf Trip" (Anywhere In The World), where we will share the stories of surfers—and the wild lengths they will go to in search of waves.
On our first iteration, I am honored to share my sailing journey that I did with my brother. We sailed and surfed our way through Mexico, Central America, The Galapagos, Easter Island and ultimately Tahiti.
In this podcast, we discuss finding uncharted surf from a sailboat, what boards we brought and what a dream quiver would have looked like, traveling to foreign countries via sailboat and the foods we ate and people we encountered along the way.
I hope you enjoy and are inspired to do a surf trip of your own (whether near home or far way)!
We will be releasing these periodically. And the next one, I am particularly very excited about, so keep a look out!
