The 8'0 R-Series Joy — Our Most Versatile (and Best-Selling) Model
The Joy has been one of our favorite custom surfboard models for 15+ years.
At 8'0" and 72.2 liters, it has plenty of foam to paddle easily and catch waves early, without feeling like too much board once you're up and riding.
The low rocker helps you get into waves early, while the pintail and vee through the bottom keep the board responsive and easy to turn.
It's a great board for someone who is still building confidence in the lineup, but we would never limit the Joy to being a beginner board. We still surf ours all the time.
The R-Series is made in the USA from durable, waterproof, recyclable foam, with a Futures fin box and fin included.
Best for smooth, mid-length surfing in a wide range of waves.
The 8'0 R-Series Joy is designed to make everyday waves worth paddling out for.
It paddles easily, catches waves early, and keeps the wave count high—even when the conditions aren't perfect.
One of the things we've learned over the years is that people don't really outgrow the Joy. As their surfing improves, they just find different reasons to keep riding it.

Catch waves Early & Often
The whole purpose of the R-Series is to make catching waves easier. Plenty of foam, low rocker, and a generous outline help you paddle into waves early and keep the wave count high.
It's fun when the waves are good, but it's especially useful when they're not. And most days, the waves aren't perfect.

Most Common Questions | R-Series
"I caught my first ever wave in the lineup within the first hour of using this board. Catching more waves more consistently means I've improved sooo much already over the past month of using this board."

TypicalFoamiesA DIFFERENT WAY TO BUILD AN ALMOND SURFBOARD
When we started working on the R-Series, the idea was pretty simple: could we take some of our favorite surfboard models and build them in a more user-friendly, price-point-friendly way, without losing the things that made those boards work in the first place?
We went to great lengths to reproduce the rails, rocker, bottom contours, and fin setups from our custom boards. The result is a molded, waterproof surfboard that's durable, requires no wax, and is remarkably easy to own.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the R-Series made of?
R-Series boards are built from a solid, recyclable foam that’s molded for durability and finished with a wax-free deck. They’re designed to handle real surf, without the worry of dings or delamination.
Do I need to wax my R-Series board?
No wax needed. The textured deck provides reliable grip whether you’re surfing in warm or cool water — just grab it and go.
How does the R-Series compare to a fiberglass board?
Fiberglass boards offer the traditional feel and flex of handcrafted glassing, while the R-Series delivers everyday durability and low maintenance. Both share the same design DNA — each R-Series model is based directly on one of our proven fiberglass shapes.
Can beginners surf the R-Series?
Absolutely. The generous volume and stability of the R-Series make it very approachable for someone who is still building confidence in the lineup. But these aren't limited to beginners—we still surf them all the time.
Where are R-Series boards made?
All R-Series boards are made in the USA, designed in California, and built to last through years of daily surf.
Is the R-Series environmentally friendly?
The R-Series was designed with recyclability in mind. The foam in every R-Series board is recyclable from nose to tail, and we're beginning to incorporate more recycled content into our EVA deck pads.
When your board eventually reaches the end of its useful life, it can be returned to us and reprocessed—keeping those materials in use and out of the landfill.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes. If we don’t have a default shipping option for your country, just reach out for a custom freight quote. We’ll help find the safest and most affordable way to get your board to you.
