Rewatchable Surf Film: Stoked & Broke
Surf Films play an important role in shaping the context, and culture, around the surfing experience.
This is the fourth installment in a series of looking back at a few of the Rewatchable Surf Films that have shaped surfing for me—and Almond by association.
Typically, when you think of a surf film shoot, you think of warm water and exotic locations. You pile some talented surfers into the lineup and then weave a narrative around the shared experience and the otherworldly-like waves.
But that's not how Cyrus Sutton's brain works.
Enter: Stoked & Broke.
The 2010 film featuring Surfer/Director Sutton and his North County San Diego pal Ryan Burch, stripped all of the usual comforts of home and lead them on a vagabond excursion around their own home town—a surf trip on $0.
11 years later, the surfing is even better than I remembered. There is one wave that I specifically recall from the premier at the Lido Theater (found at the 1:50 mark of the trailer) where Burch back-doors a big barrel, and it was one of those classic "whole theater hooting and hollering" moments that you imagine at a surf movie premier.
This was also during the season of life when Cyrus and Burch were riding the "Lord Board", which is essentially a closed-cell block of foam with no fins. It's incredible to watch—then and now—and probably would have stuck around longer but Cy told me it was hell on your back knee fighting to keep that slippery block under control.
It's a worthy rewatch, I found the full film available on something called the Surf Network on Amazon. But the trailer below gives you a pretty good taste for what to expect. I've still got the DVD in my drawer of surf movies I refuse to let go of.
