The Best Time of Year (To Be a Surfer)
Labor Day, which is only a couple weeks away, marks the official end of Summer.
If you have ever lived near the beach you know what a stark contrast there is before and after that Monday in September.
All of the hustling, bustling crowds of Summer vanish. Kids go back to school and grown-ups resume their regularly scheduled routines. The suddenness of the shift from Summer to "school year" can hardly be overstated.
But here's the best part...
The water is still warm—in fact its the warmest it will be all year. The waves are generally pretty consistent. And the lineup has returned to its normal level of year-round crowdedness.
Good waves in September are like a free pass to Disneyland when everyone else thought the park was closed.
For the next 3 weeks, call other folks into waves, share generously, keep those arms in shape, and stock up on fresh wax... because while this may be the last call for many, you and I both know that the Fall surf season is about to kick off—and I can hardly wait.
