Surfing can be a great solitary activity. It can be a great chance to reconnect with a friend. The long lulls are a quiet respite from the digital onslaught of modern living. And 95% of the time I paddle out it’s either alone for a quick session or with a buddy who I’ve been meaning to catch up with.
However, every once in a while, you gotta send the group text and insta-crowd the lineup.
Some of the most memorable surfs I can recall over the last two decades have been when I’ve rallied a bunch of friends together to share in the hooting, hollering, and laughing of too many friends in the lineup.
Of course, I have to give the disclaimer: do it thoughtfully, and be aware that you’re not the only ones in the water looking to get a few waves.
I had one of these sessions a couple weeks ago, and I still think about it. Despite the fact that surfing is a fairly solitary activity and the appetite for really good waves always outpaces the supply, surfing really is best enjoyed with a crowd of friends. All I keep thinking is “man, I wish I could bottle up that energy and save it for later”.
My encouragement to you is get a group of friends together for a surf—they don’t even all have to know each other. Share some waves. Trade boards. Laugh at each other. Ideally, pick a spot where you can have a peak to yourselves, and enjoy the camaraderie of a lineup jam-packed with friends.
You’ll remember it way more than your last twelve solo sessions combined.
